What is Terrazzo

The terrazzo system has a rich history that dates back over hundreds of years, when it was created in Italy by Venetian workers searching for a way to use the waste chips from marble remnants. Terrazzo has not changed much in terms of its consistency, since its origin.

The standard components are a mixture of aggregates, marble powder and a binding agent (matrix). It is most commonly poured in place or into moulds, cured and grounded to a smooth, uniformly textured surface finish, to reveal its colours and chips. Terrazzo’s long history has proven its longevity, sustainability and performance.

Our company also provides specific solutions for wet areas such as SPA, or even submerged coatings in interior or exterior pools. Today’s terrazzo flooring continues to combine the beauty of traditional artistry with modern developments such as recycled aggregates, epoxy resin or even submerged solutions.

The combination of exceptional beauty, extreme design flexibility, durability to last the life of the building and incredible ease of maintenance has led to a renaissance in the use of terrazzo over the past years.

Where to apply

Terrazzo is most popular with commercial and institutional flooring applications such as retail, restaurants, offices, airports, healthcare, schools or educational buildings and museums.  Most recently, there has been a rise in residential installations, especially in outdoor areas and countertops.

In addition to the typical large-scale poured-in-place flooring, MC&C provides full customization capabilities to design terrazzo stair treads, floor bases to complement the terrazzo flooring, wall cladding, sinks or furniture surfaces, guaranteeing uniformity in quality and colour between the floor and the corresponding precast finish.

Terrazzo is both appealing for new construction as well as in existing buildings that can benefit from renovation with terrazzo.

How to Apply

In-situ terrazzo it’s a manual technique where a terrazzo mixture - composed of either a resinous or cement matrix with aggregates added - is poured and polished on site. Cement-based terrazzo it’s the traditional form of terrazzo, although nowadays most of all terrazzo installations are epoxy-based – the best thin-set system.

This technique allows large areas to be installed, with few or any joints, giving it a homogeneous appearance. The selected combination is trowelled onto a prepared substrate slab. The process of gridding and polishing takes place upon setting and drying, exposing the aggregates’ full colour. Sealers can then be applied to bring out additional lustre, shine or a textured finishing. Its thickness is adjusted to suit each project, from 6mm to 15mm (depending on the chips size), or even 25mm for a Palladian solution. As it is a veneer flooring system, it needs to be placed in a solid, flat and clean surface in order to make the terrazzo and the base bond properly, as well as to respect existing functional joints.
